By bill1 » sat nov 23, 2019 4:35 pm hi The ptu seal was replaced on my 08 taurus and was covered under the cpo warranty that came with the car (6yr/100k mile) from original first date sold as new. I know there are lots of threads on ptu but i can't find an answer to my question
Ptu is leaking (thick gummy black oil) Ptu seal leak by ctrlraven » tue mar 05, 2013 12:16 am should be covered under the factory warranty as it is a powertrain item providing you are within the time and mileage limit There is no weird noise when driving but only the propane smell on idle.
Is you ptu only leak, seal it and change oil water pump
If you want preventive maintenance and keep rolling without thinking about at what time can it fail If transmission fluid is found after ptu removal, replace the transmission axle seal The compression seal only prevents dirt and debris from reaching the ptu and transmission seals However, it may temporarily seal a leak in this location
My leak may be due to a big temperature change, so i've cleaned the ptu and i'm going to keep checking periodically It wasn't that big of a leak, but knowing that this is a problem made me freak out a bit since my power train warranty is out. No problems on my '13 eb w/ 14k miles, but i have an appointment to change the ptu fluid anyway, along with a warranty repair for door ajar false alarm. If a seal is leaking between the trans and the ptu, the ptu fluid can be contaminated with trans fluid and cause the overflow
So it is important to note the color of the fluid involved in the leak (brown/pink/combo), and smell if any
Ptu fluid (or gear oil) has quite an odor to it, compared to trans fluid, no mistaking the two That said, even getting 1 change done now is. Brown/black fluid indicates a true ptu seal leak use the seal kit, which contains five pieces The ptu cover seal, intermediate shaft seal, alignment washer, deflector and seal protector tool
The intermediate shaft seal, alignment washer, cover seal, and deflector need to be installed individually and before the seal protector tool is used. The ptu on explorer and edge do as a matter of fact have a leaking ptu issue The issue is as verified by dealer that the transfer case is unserviceable and the cases very commonly leak due to excessive heat. Glad it's all sorted and only for $100!
